With the new updates to OS X operating system, we can now use diverse emoji coming in five shades. In November we saw Unicode Consortium responding to criticism of apparent ethnic homogeneity of cartoon pictograms used in text messages. The tones are now modeled on the Fitzpatrick scale, a recognised standard used by dermatologists.
Earlier there were only three characters representing non-westerners. However, the choice of emoji is more and varied than what it used to be in the past. It’s expected that there will be more than 300 emojis in the new version which is currently available only to the testers.
